Luck plays a significant role in racing, sometimes being equally crucial as skill. This was evident in William Sawalich's performance on Thursday evening at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Sawalich not only secured victory at the Bush’s Beans 200 for the second consecutive year at Bristol but also clinched his second ARCA Menards Series East championship due to an unfortunate turn of events for his competitor Connor Zilisch. Zilisch had a 16-point lead going into the final race of the East Series season.
Sawalich mentioned that the Starkey-Soundgear Toyota Camry was very fast during the race. He also highlighted the importance of having Tony Hirschman guiding him to stay calm and be careful around slower cars on the track, emphasizing that this aspect was crucial throughout the entire race.
To secure the East Series championship, Zilisch had to finish 11th or higher in Thursday's combination event with the ARCA Menards Series, regardless of Sawalich's performance.
Zilisch, unfortunately, was unable to complete the race. During Lap 65, Logan Misuraca spun out in Turns 3-4 following contact with Amber Balcaen. Zilisch, who was in second place at that moment, was left with no room to maneuver and ended up sliding sideways into the back of Misuraca's car.
Zilisch had to call it a night after sustaining damage, resulting in a 26th-place finish.
Zilisch commented that it seemed like there was contact between the 9 car (Misuraca) and the 22 car (Balcaen). According to Zilisch, the 9 car hit the fence at the top of the track and then came down in front of him, which caused their day to come to an end. Zilisch expressed disappointment in ending the season that way and losing a championship in such a manner. Despite the frustration, he acknowledged the successful year they had with the Pinnacle Racing Group team and everyone at Silver Hare Racing.
Since Zilisch was no longer competing, Sawalich only needed to ensure that his car remained intact to clinch his second East Series championship.
He accomplished more than just that. Following a fierce competition throughout the race with Landen Lewis, Sawalich seized the lead for the last time with 33 laps remaining. Not even an overtime restart could hinder Sawalich as he surged ahead of Lewis to claim victory in the Bush’s Beans 200 by 0.397 seconds.
Sawalich expressed gratitude towards 97 (Lewis) for racing well against him. Having been friends for some time, he enjoyed competing with him at this event. The unexpected crash of Zilisch during the race served as a motivation for Sawalich to push himself harder and pursue victory.
Lewis was delighted to compete alongside Sawalich throughout the evening and felt proud of the performance he and the No. 97 CR7 Motorsports team delivered on Thursday night at Bristol.
Following his second-place finish, Lewis expressed, "Throughout the day, William and I competed vigorously yet fairly, pushing ourselves to our limits while maintaining sportsmanship. Racing against such a high-caliber team was a rewarding experience. Despite being close friends with William, it was a unique and enjoyable challenge to compete against each other, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience."
After Lavar Scott in third place came his Rev Racing teammate Andres Perez in fourth. The top 10 was rounded out by Dean Thompson, Tyler Reif, Corey Day, Jake Finch, Lawless Alan, and Andy Jankowiak.
