During an event at Daytona, NASCAR icon Jeff Gordon unveiled potential plans for a sequel to Days of Thunder, exciting fans. Jeff confirmed discussions with Tom Cruise about the project at the race track. “I’ve talked to Tom about it because I want him to do the project. We want to be involved if it comes to fruition,” he stated.
The concept, reported by a media outlet in November, builds on talks about a follow-up to Tom’s 1990 racing movie—which has become a cult classic despite its initial critical reception. “Rubbin’, son, is racin’,” the famous line from crew chief Harry Hogge, continues to resonate with NASCAR enthusiasts.

Jeff, now vice chairman at Hendrick Motorsports and recently celebrating a Daytona 500 win with team owner Rick Hendrick and driver William Byron, reflected on the film’s beginnings. He mentioned that while Cole Trickle was loosely based on the late Tim Richmond, a modern sequel could offer new perspectives with current technology.
“It’s challenging to envision how to achieve it today because they used actual race cars with cameras back then, and the cameras were large. Cameras are much smaller now, so maybe it’s possible, but how do you make it realistic and truly authentic?” he pondered.
