Christopher Bell narrowly avoided a disaster involving Cole Custer on the first lap of overtime. Still, he managed to secure victory in Saturday’s Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help a Hero 200, finishing ahead of Custer and unlucky Sheldon Creed.
Creed overtook Bell for the lead on Lap 139 during a green-flag run that began on lap 97 out of 150. This put Creed in a position to secure his inaugural win in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, following an unprecedented 11 second-place finish in the series.
Nevertheless, during Lap 143, AJ Allmendinger from Kaulig Racing brushed against the outside wall, leading to the sixth caution of the race. Creed encountered issues with the right rear tire, causing a lengthy 15-second pit stop and relinquishing the lead.
Creed returned to the race in third position, trailing Bell on the outer lane. A crash between Bell and Custer from Stewart-Haas Racing on the backstretch led to both cars losing control and veering off the typical racing line. However, the drivers were able to regain control and hold onto their respective positions.
Bell, who began the race from the pole position and led 108 laps, commented, "It was definitely intense. I felt like I was about to hit the inside wall head-on... This track is challenging, especially coming off Turn 2, where whether you're on the inside or outside line, it pushes you towards the wall, causing a slight wobble as you come down."
Once more, I sympathize with Sheldon for winning the race on the long run only to lose it on pit road. It's really disappointing... Our car performed well on short runs, while Sheldon's no. 18 was particularly strong on long runs.
Regrettably, the race unfolded in a different manner for him, but luckily for us, we were given another opportunity to try again.
Bell secured his second win of the season in just his second race, following his first victory at New Hampshire in June. However, his success was at the cost of his fellow Joe Gibbs Racing teammate.
Creed was feeling inconsolable as he thought back on the race that slipped through his fingers, just as anticipated.
Creed expressed his sorrow, recalling a similar loss a few years back at the same venue. Leading 30 laps and distancing himself from Bell before the last caution, he reflected on his strong performance at the track he has always cherished. He questioned whether they could have performed any better than they did.
Today, I believe I delivered one of my top performances. It's disappointing, though. I feel a great sense of pride for my colleagues at Joe Gibbs Racing, especially the members of the 18 team. I invested in myself and allocated all available resources. Despite this, I am not earning any money this year.
